Obituary for Rose-Ellen Small

Rose-Ellen Small-(Memah), 78, died December 30, 2023, at a healthcare facility in Bangor. She was born September 13, 1945, in Garland, ME the daughter of Leon A. and Viola M. (Simpson) Hewes.

Rose-Ellen received her post-secondary education at Thayer Hospital, Waterville where she received her associate degree and became a license practical nurse in 1964. The following year Rose-Ellen met her beloved husband, Philip G. Small. They were married for 57 years before his death on September 11, 2023. She had worked with Philip as a stern-man on the Christie Rose F/V. Rose-Ellen truly enjoyed riding around with Philip in the ’65 Fastback Mustang.

Rose-Ellen worked at the James Taylor Osteopathic Hospital, Bangor, and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She also provided care at Collier’s Nursing Home, Ellsworth. Rose-Ellen did a lot of private nursing care which included the author, E.B. White, and his wife.

She was a member of the Ladies Day Circle at the Blue Hill Congregational Church as well as in her early years was and assistant Girl Scout Troop leader for both her daughters. Rose-Ellen was known as” Memah” to everyone, she loved baking her cinnamon buns and yeast rolls for family and friends. Rain or shine she attended her grandkids Ally and Austin sporting events. She enjoyed flying to Texas, going on adventures with grandkids Patrick and Dalton.

Rose-Ellen is survived by two daughters; Rebecca Rose and husband Keith, of MA, and Christie Anne and fiancé Sean of ME; four grandchildren, Allyson Rosemary, Patrick, Austin, and Dalton; three sisters, Leola, Leona and Joy; a brother Leon Manley; a sister-in-law Judy; brother-in-law, Dennis and wife Cathy and a special nephew David. She was predeceased by her parents; husband; sister Jo-Lenna; and brother-in-law David.

A memorial service will be held 2pm, January 19, 2024, at the Blue Hill Congregational Church with the Rev. Lisa Durkee presiding. Interment will be at Seaside Cemetery, Blue Hill.
