Robert C. MacLeod, Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Force, Retired, 87, died peacefully April 5, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Bob was born in Houlton, Maine on February 23, 1934, the son of Laurence R. MacLeod of Danforth and Adelie Carter Hanson of Bar Harbor. He attended schools in Bar Harbor, enlisting in the Air Force in 1952 with his basic training at Sampson AFB in New York, then being assigned to Mitchel AFB NY as a heating systems specialist. Throughout his lengthy career, he was assigned to Thule AFB in Greenland, Stead AFB (Reno) Nevada, Dow AFB (Bangor) Maine, Chateauroux-Deois AFB France, Clinton-Sherman AFB (Clinton) Oklahoma, back to Thule AFB, Keesler AFB (Biloxi) Mississippi, Wildwood AFS (Kenai) Alaska and lastly to Charleston AFB in South Carolina. He retired as an aircraft loadmaster instructor after having participated in numerous worldwide cargo and air drop missions of equipment and personnel in the C-141A Starlifter transport aircraft. His duties included numerous trips to Alaska, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Okinawa, Guam, Korea and Japan, England, Ireland, Scotland, Labrador, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India, Bahrain, Hawaii, Panama, the West Indies, Brazil, Ascension Island, Azores, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. After his retirement from the Air Force in June 1972, he returned to Seal Harbor with his family. Bob then gained employment with E.G. Jordan Inc. as a master oil burner man, journeyman plumber, and gas service tech until retirement in 1995. He then worked part time at Smugglers Den campground in Southwest Harbor, his “fun job”.
Bob collected friends everywhere he went. His great nephew Rob Beal said it best when he described Uncle Bob as laid back, always laughing, and sweet. If anyone needed advice or assistance on a home project Bob was there. Even when retired he would stay busy with projects around the house.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Karen Rumill of Seal Harbor. He leaves behind their daughter Diane Marie MacLeod of Bar Harbor and her fiancé John McDaniel, granddaughter Katherine Skeate and husband Patrick of Bar Harbor, son Landry Scott MacLeod and wife Virginia (Ginny) of Southwest Harbor, grandson Ryan and significant other Tiana Turner of Lamoine and granddaughter Amanda of Portland, his son Robert C. MacLeod Jr. and wife Suzanne of Bar Harbor, granddaughters Melissa MacLeod of Trenton and Robin Sue Tapley and husband Wyman of Bar Harbor, Daughter Melodie MacLeod Haskell of Bar Harbor and granddaughter Lindsay Doyle and Frank of Canada, his sister Joanne Beal of Southwest Harbor, great grandchildren Peighton, Bodie, Tia, Hadley, Harlyn, and Kaitlyn, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was pre-deceased by granddaughter Michelle Mills of Bar Harbor.
He also leaves behind his adored partner of 10 years Kay Tracy of Hancock, her five children and their families.
Burial will be in the Seal Harbor Cemetery next to his beloved wife Karen. Graveside services will be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330.
