Obituary for Robert Russell "Bobby" Dorr Jr.

Ellsworth
Robert “Bobby” Dorr, Jr., age 43, died peacefully at home on May 5, 2021, with his wife by his side. He is now free from the shackles of cancer. Bobby was born in Ellsworth on March 22, 1978 to Robert “Bob” Dorr, Sr., and the late Stanya Holbrook Dorr. Bobby graduated from Sumner Memorial High School in 1996. After graduation he became licensed in plumbing and HVAC and opened his business, Acadia Heating. In 2009, Bobby was inspired to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. In 2010, he was hired as a career firefighter for the Ellsworth Fire Department where he quickly climbed the ranks serving as Lieutenant, Captain and, most recently, Deputy Chief. Bobby was selected as Firefighter of the Year in 2012, 2016 and 2017; the only EFD firefighter to receive this distinction 3 times. He received a certificate of commendation for actions that resulted in a successful rescue in 2013 and was honored to receive the Patriot Award in 2019 for providing support to a member of EFD who was deployed overseas. Most recently, Bobby was honored and humbled to receive the Captain Joel Barnes Award for demonstrating outstanding professionalism and service to his community. In addition to a distinguished career with the Ellsworth Fire Department, Bobby was lead instructor at the Hancock County Fire Academy for six years.
The only thing Bobby was prouder of than his career as a firefighter, was his family and friends. Whether he was deer hunting with his dad, driving around with his girls, or relaxing at Camp Dreamcatcher, Bobby was happiest when he was with the people he loved. Bobby loved fiercely and gave of himself to support others, truly living up to his creed, “For those I love, I will sacrifice.”
Bobby is survived by his beloved wife, Heather, his daughters Aubrey and Allison Dorr, his stepchildren, Benton and Braelynn Bird, and his father, Bob Dorr, his father-in-law Fred Ehrlenbach and wife Elizabeth, as well as his brother Jeremy Dorr and his sons Jeremy Jr. and Jayden, sister Lorraine Bohacik, her husband Tim and their son Timothy, brother-in-law Roddy Ehrlenbach, his wife Julia Eggleston and their children Baylis and Adeline. He will be greatly missed by his dear friends Steve and Amanda Corson and Tom and Allyson Wallace. He is predeceased by his mother, Stanya Dorr, and sister-in-law Janet Rice Dorr, his grandparents, two uncles and one aunt.
The family expresses sincere gratitude to the staff at Mary Dow Cancer Center, Donna Ray, and Beacon Hospice for their care during Bobby’s final days and to the members of the Ellsworth Professional Firefighters Local 3402 for their unwavering support since Bobby’s passing.
A firefighter memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 16th at 1:00pm at the Ellsworth Middle School Track followed by a private graveside service at Steuben Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ellsworth Professional Firefighters Local 3402 1 City Hall Plaza Ellsworth, Maine 04605, for a scholarship that is being established in Bobby’s memory.
