Obituary for Ret. MSGT Robert Wendell "Bob" Mitchell

Marietta, Georgia

Retired MSgt Robert Wendell "Bob" Mitchell, of Marietta, Georgia passed away at home on March 8, 2024. He was born on February 2, 1931, in Trenton, Maine.

Born on a small farm in rural Maine, Robert was a private person; philosophic, and contemplative, but still possessed a boyish glee. He found joy in the simplest of things and had a great love for the earth. Bob shared 72 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Ruth, with whom he loved to dance. He was always educating himself to learn and achieve more, whether in his work or personal life. He took great pride in his 23 years of service in the United States Air Force as a weather meteorologist, and later as an Environmentalist with the State of Georgia. He graduated from Ellsworth High School and earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Kennesaw State University. He served in the United States Air Force from September 1951 - October 1974, and served in the Vietnam War.

He looked forward each year to traveling to his beloved Maine and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. Sharing a martini with Pat or a bourbon with Mike, the cocktail hour was always about family, connecting and sharing life with loved ones. Music and dancing gave Bob wings and let him express his joy of living with those around him. He and Ruth could always be counted on to start the dancing at any venue they frequented and many of the pianists would start playing their song when Bob and Ruth came into view. He also loved automobiles, woodworking, and being outside. He enjoyed writing poems, and the occasional short stories when his girls were young. He was meticulous and detailed about everything and we are still amazed at how thoroughly he went through life. We will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ruth, and their two daughters, Elizabeth (Pat) and Suzanne (Michael). He also leaves four grandchildren, Ross, Chase, Alec, and Alison, and one great granddaughter, Madden. He was predeceased by his father Ross G. Mitchell and Ellen P Mitchell, brothers Lewellen, Ross Jr., Albert, and sister Louise.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date in Mount Desert, Maine.

Donations can be made to St Jude Children Research Hospital or Veterans of Foreign Wars.
