Obituary for Raymond Stanwood Ellis
Gouldsboro
Raymond “Red” Stanwood Ellis, 92, passed away on August 6, 2021, in his home after a period of declining health. Raymond was born on July 23, 1929, to parents Howard and Helen (Smith) Ellis of Natick, MA.
Ray graduated from Natick High School, the class of 1948. During his high school years, he worked for Natick Ice and later on, O.B. Hill as one of their first truck drivers. Shortly after graduation in 1948, Ray joined the Navy. He was stationed at Port Hueneme, CA, where he would meet his future wife at a U.S.O Dance. Later, he was transferred to Alaska where he would serve with the Seabees. Upon completing his service in 1950, he became a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 12 in Los Angeles. In 1958, he transferred to IUOE Local 4 in Boston, MA where he remained a member for 63 years. Ray operated cranes for several companies, including Carter Pile in Netick, Wellesley Crane Service in Southborough, MA and the Hub Foundation in Chelmsford, MA. Ray retired at age 58 and moved to Gouldsboro where he lived for 34 wonderful years on the Bay. During this time, he served as a selectman for the Town of Gouldsboro and was co-caretaker of Smithville Cemetery with his uncle Roger Smith.
Ray was also involved in many organizations; the Natick Meridian Lodge, the Anah Shriners Lobster Unit for over 30 years and the American Legion in Trenton.
Ray enjoyed a long and happy retirement on the coast of Gouldsboro, spent dancing with his wife, Glenna. Together, they frequented the Bangor Singles Club and the Surry Grange Hall. Ray was an active part of many parades all over the Northeast and even Canada with the Anah Lobster Boat Unit. He and Glenna also enjoyed traveling with the Shriner’s Camping group for many happy seasons.
Ray loved his family, always welcoming visits with open arms from his friends, children, grandchildren and especially great- grandchildren. They will all miss him deeply.
He is survived by his two children, Donald Ellis and his companion Vickie Brown of Steuben and Kris Montalbano of Natick, MA. Grandsons, Dennis Ellis and wife Jess Pert of Ellsworth and James Montalbano and wife Lisa of Natick. Granddaughters Sarah Ellis Goodspeed and husband Ray of Levant, and Julie Montalbano Almlov and husband Erik of Bridgton. Great-grandchildren, Jake, Makenzie, Emily, Nicholas, Allison, and Martin. Daughter-in-law Susan Ellis, and Sister-in-law Virginia Ellis. Many other nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends.
Ray is predeceased by his wife Glenna, brother Ronald Ellis and son-in-law Nicholas Montalbano.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you and appreciation to Ray’s wonderful caregivers from the Hancock County Visiting Nurse Association, Kelley, Katherine, Debbie, Allie, and Rob. A special thank you to Kerri from One Step Homecare of Ellsworth. The care of these individuals allowed Ray to stay happy and comfortable in his own home. Our family will be forever grateful to each and every one of you. The family is also extremely grateful for the assistance the Gouldsboro Volunteer Fire Department has provided over the last several years.
Graveside services for Ray will be held at 11am on September 4, 2021, at the Smithville Cemetery 260 Smithville Rd. Steuben, followed by a celebration of life and luncheon at the Henry D. Moore Library 22 Village Rd. Steuben.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Raymond’s memory be sent to Gouldsboro Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O. Box 68, Prospect Harbor, ME 04669. Or the Henry D. Moore Library 22 Village Rd. Steuben.
