HANCOCK, ME/CAPE COD, MA

Ralph Freeman Cahoon, Jr. died on November 10, 2018, peacefully at his home in Hancock, Maine, while in the loving care of his wife, Mary.

Born February 17, 1937, in post-Depression Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to Dorothy (Marceline) Cahoon and Ralph F. Cahoon, Sr., Ralph was the eldest son among nine siblings and was dedicated to caring for other members of his family, especially his mother and brother, Steve. Ralph proudly served in the U.S. Army, stationed in the mountains of Colorado and Germany after WWII and later recalled to service during the Korean War.

Ralph has three sons from a former marriage, Ralph III, David, and John all of Cape Cod; a grandson, Owen; two stepchildren, Chris (of Florida) and Sara French (of Barnstable, MA). He leaves a sister, Rosalie Jones of Marstons Mills, MA; brothers, Bruce of Augusta, ME, William of Centerville, MA and Tom of Hyannis, MA.

In 1989, Ralph married the love of his life, Mary Arnone. After retiring as a corrections officer at the Barnstable House of Correction in Massachusetts, Ralph and Mary moved to Down East Maine in 1989 to make a new life. Ralph worked for a community transportation company and rebuilt the couple's home before opting to return to his roots as a lobsterman. He was a skilled and respected fisherman until 2014, when ill health required him to pull his traps one last time.

Ralph was a friend to many, a gentle giant of a man who was honest and hardworking. Among those already missing him are his closest friends, including George, Robert, Wes, Jim, Kenny and Tom.

Gifts in Ralph's memory can be made to the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 101, Hancock, ME 04640.

Ralph's life will be celebrated at a later date. Burial will be private.
