Obituary for Phyliss B. Jamison

BAR HARBOR

Phyliss B. Jamison, 92, died unexpectedly September 29, 2023, at Mt. Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor. She was born June 4, 1931, in Hermon, Maine, the daughter of George and Vivian (Salisbury) Bates.

Phyliss graduated from Hermon High School and obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maine, Farmington. Phyliss and her former husband, Colby G. Walker, Jr., married in 1951 and had five children, whom they raised in Canton.

In 1977, Phyliss married George H. Jamison, her beloved husband of 43 years, who predeceased her. They were devoted members of Wayside Bible Baptist Church, where they offered loving counsel and a helping hand to anyone in need.

Phyliss was a schoolteacher, and her wisdom, kindness, and exacting grasp of English grammar touched the lives of many students. An animal lover, antique collector, and talented artist, she was known for her award-winning quilts. She was a beautiful, witty storyteller who charmed and befriended all, and she will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Phyliss is survived by her children, Dale (Nancy) Walker, Surry, ME; David Walker, Hartford, ME; Alan Walker, Benicia, CA; Carol Walker, Nashville, TN; and Lynne (Larry) Larson, Providence, RI, and Northeast Harbor, ME, as well as five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving Phyliss are her sisters Ethel LeClair, Lois Hudson and Joan Boyd, and her brother Herbert (Lucille) Bates. Phyliss was predeceased by her sisters Kathleen Gilks and Geraldine Bates, and her brother Leslie Bates.

Phyliss asked that her life be celebrated, not mourned. She possessed deep faith in God and was ready to join George in heaven. A memorial service will be held at Wayside Bible Baptist Church in Livermore at 11:00 am on October 17, 2023. In honor of her love of animals, her family requests memorial donations to the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME 04605.
