Obituary for Murray Tuchman

After a long and full life that included world travels, satisfying work, interesting hobbies and the love and company of family and friends, Murray Tuchman passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 1, at MDI Hospital.
Murray Tuchman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 14, 1936, to Rose (Luria) and William Tuchman. Murray was interested in sports throughout his life and he loved to visit sports stadiums all over the country.
In 1956, Murray and Helene met during a history class at Brooklyn College. It was love at first sight. After marrying in 1959, they spent the next 62 years getting to know one another, raising a family, and exploring the world together.
Murray was bilingual in Hebrew and English and could read Greek, Russian, German and French. Over the course of his adult life, Murray earned four academic degrees including a doctorate in library and information science from Simmons. He served as director of the library for the Hebrew College in Brookline, Mass., for 36 years. In 2001, he became an active volunteer for the Boston Literacy Coalition, traveling once a week into the Boston schools to help first- and second graders learn to read.
In 1968, Murray and his family discovered Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. The family camped at the MDI Campground each summer for many years. Murray and his family hiked most of the trails and carriage roads of Acadia many times over. In 1998, Murray and Helene bought a home in Bass Harbor as they spent more and more of each year on MDI.
Murray is survived by his wife, Helene, his son Joel, his daughter Miriam and her husband, Stephen, and his grandchildren Ariela and Erez. The Tuchman family wishes to thank all of the wonderful people who took care of Murray at Birch Bay and MDI Hospital.
