Maxwell Murray Joy, Jr
Murray passed away on June 12, 2021, at a local hospital following years of declining health. He was born
in Ellsworth, February 4, 1946, the son of Maxwell M. Joy, Sr. and Venita (Sargent) Joy.
He enlisted in the US Army after graduation from NMVTI serving in the Vietnam War, receiving the honors of Air Medal and Bronze Star. He was a retired firefighter from the US Navy Base in Winter Harbor. His firefighting career included being a full-time firefighter with the Ellsworth Fire Dept. and a lifetime member of the Gouldsboro Fire Department. Upon retirement he volunteered many hours to the Fire Prevention Program. Clown "Captain Bubba" established a unique way of teaching children about fire prevention using magic and clowning for schools across the State. He recently received his 50-year pin from the Winter Harbor Masonic Lodge #192.
Murray's passion was hunting, fishing, camping and the great outdoors with his family. In later years, the highlight of his life was supporting all his grandchildren's activities and had a great presence at their musical and sporting events. He was proud to live in a home spanning six generations and eight generations on the land.
Murray is survived by his wife of 53 years Sylvia (Wheelden) Joy; son Duane Joy and daughter Brailee; daughter Michelle Smith, her husband Larry Smith, Jr. (Sonny) and her son Patrick Pinkham as well as extended grandchildren Ava Kidder and Brynn and Myah Jellison. He is also survived by his sister Anita Kaestner of Independence, MO; brother David Joy and his wife Cheryl of Birch Harbor and several nieces and nephews; and two longtime friends from the fire service, Jimmy DeWitt, and John Morse. He was predeceased by his sister Marianne lnterieri and son-in-law Scott Jellison.
Visiting hours will be held at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home in Ellsworth on Thursday, June 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 6:30pm. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, June 18 at the Winter Harbor Gym on School Street. Following the service Murray will be granted his last ride around Schoodic Point thanks to the Gouldsboro Fire Department. Due to Park restrictions, the procession is for immediate family only. All are welcome for a reception at the family home, 467 Main Street, Birch Harbor.
