Obituary for Lucille I. Clarke
Ellsworth and Hancock
Lucille I. Clarke, 92, passed away on November 15, 2019 in Ellsworth. She was born February 18, 1927 in
Gouldsboro the daughter of Lyle M and Doris M (Tracy) Clark.
Lucille was hard-working and family orientated from an early age as she moved to Portland to work on
assembly lines during the war-times, she would later return to the Sullivan/Hancock areas where she
met her future husband, Hayward J. Clarke who predeceased her. They ran the family farm in Hancock
together while having many other jobs as well while raising their sons Loren and Bruce. Lucille was
instrumental in the start up of the Hancock Volunteer Fire Association Inc. and in a 1958 United Press
Telephoto showed her driving the new 6-ton fire truck which was actually stationed at the Clarke Home
on the Eastside Road in Hancock. Lucille would go on to become the first woman elected Select person
in Hancock. She also worked for many years in the town office of Hancock as the Tax Collector and Town
Clerk. She also assisted in getting the Hancock Volunteer Police Department established and continually
volunteered as a member of the Hancock Volunteer Police Department.
Lucille worked for Wyman’s Blueberry factory for many years. She served as sextant of Riverside
Cemetery for 20 years. Lucille volunteered for Robert and Mary’s Place for many years, Friends in
Action and Loaves and Fishes all of Ellsworth. She was a member of the United Baptist Church of
Ellsworth and the Hancock Women’s Club. Lucille won the George Hale- Silver Frame Award for her work
within the Community and as she got older she continued giving back to others. She was also very
instrumental in the family camp named after her “Lucy’s Camp” it will be treasured and used within the
family forever.
Lucille is survived by two sons, Loren Clarke and his wife Donna and Bruce Clarke and his wife Trudy.
Two grandchildren, Jason Clarke and his girlfriend Jordan Servetas and Jeff Clarke and his wife Dennett.
Lucille was so proud of her (five) amazingly special great-grandchildren, Colby, Javen, Ellie, Bailey and
Whitney; sisters, Laverne, Jeri and brother, Casper (Buddy). She was predeceased by sisters, Frances,
Frieda, Roberta and Kaye and her great friend, Tina Worden
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Courtland Rehab & Living Center for the professional
care and compassion that they extended to Lucille.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:30 AM, November 21, 2019 at Riverside Cemetery in Hancock.
