Obituary for Louise T. Kelley

Bernard
Louise T. Kelley, 99, died August 15, 2015 at her home in Bernard surrounded by family. Born September 15, 1915 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Herbert Hiram and Ruth Corey Thurston.
She was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High in 1933 and Farmington Normal School in 1935. Continuing her education, she attended the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut and was a graduate of University of Maine in Orono.
In 1940 Louise married Harvey Raymond Kelley Sr. It was the beginning of a relationship that resulted in 69 years of marriage - a marriage that her family holds as a measure of love and commitment.
Louise began her career as an educator in the Boothbay Harbor region teaching at Trevett and East Boothbay. Her career included these other Maine schools: McLain School in Rockland, Mary E. Taylor School in Camden, Rockport Elementary School, and Governor Anderson in Belfast. She always thought fondly of the many years spent encouraging and guiding the children of Maine. In Connecticut she taught at Plumfield School in Darien and Gilbert Bennet School in Wilton.
After retirement, she opened the 1895 Shop in Bernard, allowing her to pursue her long time passion for antiques and collectables. She loved the sea and, with her husband Harvey and their three children, embarked on a once in a lifetime adventure of living aboard a traditional coasting schooner, the Mabel. It was a wonderful family time for all and each of them took away a richer outlook on life.
Louise was a loving wife and mother who always thought of family first. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by a son, Harvey R. Kelley, Jr., and wife, Dianne, of Sullivan; two daughters, Carolyn Kelley Gothard of Bernard and Margaret Kelley Jones, of Camden; sister, Ruth Barlow Stevens, and friend, Roy Peasley of Rockland; five grandchildren, Laurel Laster and husband Lee of Hamden, CT, Jennifer Zoehler of Lebanon, TN, Daniel Cummings of Lincolnville, Carrie Bachman and husband Mark of Minneapolis, MN and Colin Kelley of Minneapolis, MN; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special nephew, John Upham and wife, LeeAnn, of Thomaston. She was predeceased by Harvey R. Kelley Sr., her dearly loved husband of 69 years, her mother Ruth Corey Thurston, her father Herbert Hiram Thurston, her step-father Wendell Everts Barlow, her brother Edward Thurston, her sisters Elizabeth Keniston, Lillian McNeil Eaton, Gwendolyn Barlow Upham Robinson, her sister-in-law Barbara Kenney and brother-in-law Frederick Kenney, and her grandson, Raymond A. Cummings Jr.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Andrea Kelley and Hospice of Hancock County, especially Emily Smith, for their loving and expert care and support.
At her request there will be no funeral service. A committal service for family and friends will occur on the occasion of her 100th birthday in September. Those wishing to remember Louise are encouraged by the family to support the fine work of Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Avenue, Ellsworth 04605
