Katrina L. Norberg
Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor
With her husband and family members by her side, Katrina Louise Norberg passed away on May 18, 2021, at Birch Bay Village in Bar Harbor.
Katrina, the daughter of Charles and Jessie Lawrence of Harrington, Maine was born on December 28, 1937. She spent her childhood years in Harrington and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1955. She furthered her education at Farmington State Teachers College and at the University of Maine in Orono where she graduated in 1959.
On June 25, 1960, Katrina married Robert Norberg, and for most of their lives they resided in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Through the years, she was involved in many family activities with her husband and two children, Eric, and Kirsten. She was an official at her children’s swim meets and ski races, a Girl Scout leader, and a president of the MDI High School music boosters, among other involvements.
Katrina was also devoted to her career as a home economics teacher. During her forty-year career, she taught at Ellsworth High School, Pemetic High and Elementary School, Narraguagus High School, and Mount Desert Island High School.
As a home economics teacher, she was a splendid cook and seamstress. She had a passion for children, helping to start the “baby room” and Rainbow Nursery at Mount Desert Island High School. Though she loved to sew and cook, her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and friends. Sharing a cup of coffee or a full meal with friends was when she was happiest.
After Katrina and Bob retired, they spent their winters in Sebastian, Florida, where they were members of the Whispering Pines Community. She and Bob continued to spend their summers in Southwest Harbor where Katrina saw old friends and made new ones while working the register at Carroll Drug Store and running the Seawall Point Cottage. Katrina spent considerable time exploring family genealogy and local history during her retirement.
She was a member of the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church and the First Presbyterian Church in Sebastian, FL. She enjoyed spending time with her Lord and her church families.
Katrina is survived by her husband of nearly 61 years, her son Eric Norberg and daughter-in-law Karen, her daughter Kirsten and son-in-law Joseph Bushman, and five grandchildren: Sara and Alicia Norberg and Timothy, Katie, and AJ Bushman. Katrina also leaves two sisters, Junita Drisko and Helene Hammond, and numerous nieces and nephews. Katrina was predeceased by her parents, her brother Walter Lawrence, and her sister Elaine Mayhew.
The family would like to give thanks and gratitude to the staff at Birch Bay Village Retirement Community. You all provided such loving and compassionate care to Katrina as her Alzheimer’s disease progressed.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church on Wednesday, July 7 at 11 a.m. A reception will be held immediately following. Interment will be held in Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrington, Maine at 4 p.m.
