Obituary for John Sarge "Sarge" Fox

John Sergeant Fox
November 28th 1939 ~ August 5th 2022
San Francisco, CA

Sarge grew up in the beautiful countryside outside of Philadelphia next door to three male cousins, and a grandmother. He was very blessed to have loving and caring parents and to spend almost every summer on Mount Desert Island, ME. There, he learned to hike, fish, and sail. The family owned a lovely wooden rowboat and a twelve-foot wooden sailboat on which the family learned to sail. Sarge was a born entrepreneur. As a child he charged his sister a nickel every time she would pass through his room to go downstairs.

He attended Chestnut Hill Academy and graduated from Williams College. After college, Sarge was in Newport, RI, for Officer Candidate School in the Navy It was quite an eye-opener for him. He became a navigator on a landing ship dock in the Mediterranean. After the Navy, Sarge and a friend drove out west and he settled Sausalito where he bought a signage business and sailed year-round. Sarge was caring, generous, fiercely patriotic. He liked helping the underdog.

Sarge passed away peacefully in his sleep in Concord, CA. He is survived by two first cousins, Fran and Tony Fox, his stepsons, Christopher, and Kevin Kelly, as well as his dear sister Mary Anna Fox who still lives in the family home in Goose Cove, Maine.

Graveside Services will be held at 1pm, Friday August 19, 2022, at Fox Cemetery, 70 Dix Point Road, West Tremont with Pastor Blake Brown officiating.

In lieu of flowers those who desire may make contributions in Sarge’s memory to MDI Community Sailing, P.O. Box 116, Southwest Harbor, 04679.
