John Moore Berry, 85, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2019, at his residence in Brooklin. He was born on July 22, 1934, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Florence Lucille Whittenburg and Moore Burleson Berry.
John was educated in San Antonio public schools. After joining the United States Navy, he completed Naval Cryptologic School in San Diego, California. He served active duty for more than 21 years as a Cryptologic Technician - Radio, retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Throughout his naval career he was an active member of the CPO Club, raising funds for fellow sailors in crisis. Following his career in the Navy, he worked at the Brooklin Boat Yard. He later served as Caretaker and Estate Manager for “Boldwater”, and the family of the late Spencer L. Murfey, Jr., of Brooklin, for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, and the Grand Lodge of Maine, Winter Harbor Lodge #192 A.F. & A.M. He served with the Brooklin Volunteer Fire Department, and in recent years volunteered at the Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital.
John is survived by his daughter, Janice Berry Zenter, and her husband, Charles E. Zenter, of Key West, Florida, and Castine; son, Craig S. Berry, and his wife, Christine A. Feorino, of Green Brook, New Jersey; granddaughter, Morgan E. Zenter, and grandson, Colton R. Berry; sister-in-law, Pamela Anderson, and her partner, Paula Grindle, of Bangor. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 40 years, Patricia E. (Anderson) Berry.
