Obituary for Joan Mary Anderson

Joan Mary Anderson, 72, died February 8, 2019 at her home with her partner and family surrounding her after a long illness. She was born in Ellsworth, November 9, 1946, daughter of Frank Whitehouse and Vivian Louise (Hooper/Simons) Anderson, Jr.

She attended McKinley and Pershing Schools in Amherst and graduated from Ellsworth High School class of 1965. Joan attended Northeastern University and graduated with honors at University of Maine, Orono receiving her Master’s degree in Social Work. She was a nursing home administrator and worked long hours helping people in crisis, and advocating for the elderly. Her faith journey was varied. She was comfortable in Protestant, Catholic and Native American religious cultures. Joan was interested in genealogy,which led her to be an active member of the Daughters of American Revolution. She was a Rainbow Girl, a page at the State House in Augusta and a board member of the Eastern Maine Area on Aging.

Joan loved to travel and study local cultures. She did mission work in Mexico and was a member of an international walking group, hiking with them in many European countries.

She is survived by long time partner and caregiver, Philip LeBlanc of Addison; sisters, Maureen Lewis, Ellsworth and Patricia Wilbur, South Portland; children, Robin Larson-Clarke and Kristina Larson both of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Colby and Javen Clarke, Ellsworth; nieces, Bobbi Chalmers, her husband Joe and children, Abigal, Annie and Andrew, Southwest Harbor and Adrienne Wilson and husband, Jeff and daughter Samantha, South Portland; nephew, Allen Wilbur, South Portland; one uncle, Fred C. Anderson, Brewer;special aunts, Robin and Holly Hitchcock, Ellsworth and many cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and brother, John.

Calling hours will be held 10:00-12:00, March 2, 2019 with Rosary prayed at 11:00 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth. Interment will be held in the spring at Mr. Rest Cemetery, Amherst.
