Obituary for Joan Catherine Allen

Bar Harbor
Joan Catherine (McClay) Allen, 86, died peacefully in her sleep September 3, 2020, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born March 28, 1934, in Brewer, the daughter of John Patrick and Gladys Hawkins (Rose) McClay. After graduating from John Bapst High School in Bangor, she attended Nurses Training at Mercy Hospital in Portland and returned to Bangor to work at St. Joseph Hospital. In 1962, she married her husband Don and moved to Bar Harbor. She was an active member of Holy Redeemer Parish where she served in many roles over the years, including Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council, and Sunday School, as well as assisting in many other parish events. She was also active in the MDI Hospital Auxiliary and the MDI YWCA.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Donald D. “Don” Allen of Bar Harbor; three sons, Donald D. Allen, Jr. of South Portland, Gary P. Allen of Chicago, IL, and Richard L. “Rick” Allen and his wife, Kim of North Andover, MA; two grandchildren, Ben E. Allen and Nora A. Allen both of North Andover, MA; three sisters, Mary Ellen Hayes and her husband, Jessie of Palmyra, Margaret Ann “Peggy” Barrett and her husband Gary of Manchester, Susan Hayes and her husband Joe of Brewer; one brother, Richard “Dick” McClay of Bangor; one sister-in-law, Joyce McClay of Bangor; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother John A. “Jack” McClay of Bangor, and her sister-in-law Judy McClay also of Bangor.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor, with Father Emile Dube, as celebrant. Interment will be in Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.
