Obituary for Janet Lee Marville
East Blue Hill
Janet L. Marville, age 97, died peacefully August 22, 2022, at home, surrounded by family in East Blue Hill. Born on August 21, 1925, in Brightwaters, Long Island, New York, Jan was the only daughter of Hazel and Harry R Kirkup. She attended elementary and public high schools in the Bayshore Brightwaters community and continued her education at both William and Mary College and Chatham University graduating in 1946. After attending Kathryn Gibbs Secretarial School in New York, she began work at Johns Manville where she met the love of her life, Bob Marville. Janet and Bob were married for 67 years until Bob passed away in 2017. A true love story, Jan left to join Bob on the same day, August 22, just five years later.
Jan and Bob lived in Briarcliff Manor, New York for 20 years where they raised their family and Bob pursued his professional career at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Upon Bob’s retirement in 1983, they moved to Maine and built their home, Loons Landing, in the village of East Blue Hill. Jan was fully engaged in the community and church both in New York and in her Downeast home. Jan was a pianist and loved singing. She sang with the Bagaduce Chorale while also serving at the Bagaduce Music Lending Library. She volunteered at the Tree of Life and Turn-style in Blue Hill for a number of years. She drove her Subaru across the Peninsula and surrounding area to install MedicAlert systems day and night until retiring in her 80’s. The garden at the Blue Hill hospital was a labor of love. She was an active member of both the Blue Hill Congregational Church and the Trinitarian Congregational Parish in Castine. In addition to supporting her community, Jan loved to tend the beautiful gardens that she and Bob created at Loons Landing. She was an avid reader, a lover of music, a skillful tennis player and had a special gift for arranging flowers, knitting and needlepoint. It gave her great pleasure to prepare a wonderful meal for family and friends. With grace and faith, her life enriched the lives of many - whether it was installing a MedicAlert, cooking a meal or visiting someone who needed a hug.
Jan and her husband Bob contributed to the community in many ways, including fostering development of the Friendship Cottage, a day program for individuals with Alzheimer’s; donating the new home for the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and supporting local schools including the Harbor School, Bay School, George Stevens Academy and Liberty School. They established college scholarship funds for local students and helped create a firm foundation for the Tree of Life and Turn-style and supported the Blue Memorial Hospital, The Grand, Bagaduce Lending Library, and Collins Center for the Performing Arts.
Jan is survived by her daughters, Lee Marville of Newbury Neck and Nancy Miller and her husband David of Nashville, TN; granddaughters, Erin Miller of Memphis, TN and Megan Bonneau and her husband Ron Bonneau of Atlanta, GA; great grandchildren, Trystan Robert (age 5), Hayden Bonneau (age 14 months) and Baby Boy Bonneau, joining this family in December.
Jan’s family is forever grateful to caregivers Elizabeth Bixby, Margrethe Hooper, Merle Bisberg, Melissa Petrik, Rhonda Smith, Diane Hardy, Marty Duncan and to Scott Heney for his many years of service.
A celebration of life service will be held at the Blue Hill Congregational Church, Tuesday August 30 at 11am, with a reception immediately following the service (exact location TBD and announced at the service).
