Obituary for Grace M. Schimpf

Hancock -- Grace M. Schimpf, 87, passed away on Dec. 12, 2018, surrounded by family at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth. She was the fourth child born to Harry and Irma Ferrante in North Bergen, NJ.

She grew up in New Jersey, and in 1962 she and her husband George moved the family to Sciota, PA. In 1991 she moved to coastal Maine, an area that she had always loved. Family and friends were the most important part of life to Grace and she passed that valuable gift on to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grace loved to draw, paint, crochet, knit, make miniatures and sew. She was passionate about quilting, and her family and many friends are warmed by her quilts. She was also a great gardener and could grow anything. Many people in Hancock County now have plants that originated in one of her many gardens. Grace was also involved in many clubs and organizations in Maine and Pennsylvania, where she held various leadership positions.

She is survived by her children, Kathy Hoke of Orland, Mary Nangle (Richard) of Hancock, George Schimpf Jr of Gouldsboro, Stephanie Dillman (Brian) of Bethlehem PA, Christina Shollenberger (Steve) of West Friendship MD, Brenda Block Schimpf of Sciota PA, 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and her ex-husband George of Inverness FL. She is also survived by a brother Robert Ferrante of Blairstown NJ and a sister Irma Chazotte of Woodcliffe Lake, NJ.

She was predeceased by her son David Schimpf, her granddaughter Karen Shollenberger and son-in-law Dean Hoke.

The family would like to thank her caregivers Mary, Christina, Emma, Emily, Kate and Chevie for their care and devotion to Grace. Their care enabled Grace to stay in her home for as long as possible. We would like to also thank the staff at Beacon Hospice for their never-ending support to all family members. We will never forget the patience, kindness and wonderful care that Grace received from the staff at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital throughout the years.

There will be a Celebration of Life on January 26, 2018 from 2pm to 4:30pm at Lygonia Masonic Lodge, 140 Bucksport Rd, Ellsworth.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Grace’s memory to Beacon Hospice, 289 State St., Bangor ME 04401 or the Hancock Women’s Club, PO Box 274, Hancock, ME 04640.
