Obituary for Gardiner L. Mitchell

Southwest Harbor - Gardiner L. Mitchell, 89, died on December 25, 2020. He was born January 4, 1931, in Southwest Harbor the son of Julius E. and Doris A. (Hodgdon) Mitchell.
Gardiner grew up in Southwest Harbor, graduating from Pemetic High School in 1950. He later went into the Army and spent two years in Japan. When he returned from the service, he married Janet (Lewis) Mitchell. He soon joined the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. His first shore station was Seawall, Maine. Later stations included Matinicus Island, Chatham Massachusetts, Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. He also served on the ship Explorer voyaging to Africa as well as the Caribbean. He later returned to Southwest Harbor where he was employed by the Southwest Harbor Coast Guard base for 43 years before his retirement.
Gardiner is survived by his wife Janet; daughter Pamela Mitchell and her husband, Peter Smith; son Robert Mitchell and his wife Jennifer all of Mt. Desert; three grandchildren, Nat Brehmer and his wife Shelley of Apopka, Florida; Brett Mitchell of Wiscasset and Calli Mitchell of Boston, Massachusetts. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He also leaves behind special friends, Wilbert Terry, Keith Clark, Merle Cousins, and Joe Reynolds.
Graveside services will be held 2pm, Saturday, May 15, 2021 Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor.
