Obituary for Floyd William Hardison

Floyd William Hardison, 88, passed away in a drowning accident February 9, 2024, with his son, Ronnie, and grandsons, James, and Adam by his side. He was born in Waltham, August 1, 1935, the son of Arthur E. and Elvellyn A. (Kemp) Hardison.
How do we say good-bye to a man who was loved by not only his family but the countless people he came into contact with over a long life of hard work, hunting, fishing, raking blueberries, Shrine times, coffee at the garage with the boys, Friday night card games, camp time into Rocky Pond, and traveling the backroads of Waltham and beyond? Floyd’s work life began as a wood’s contractor. He started with horses and one truck and then went on to working with one skidder which became two as he grew his business. He had great respect for police officers, wardens, and Veterans.
He was a Little League coach and umpire for the Waltham boys for many years and even umpired for Cave Hill. Grampa warmed many benches to watch his grandchildren play sports along with attending numerous school functions and graduations. He treasured his family and time spent with all of them. Floyd never missed a chance to dance with Norma, his forever bride. The two of them always shared a dance or two at weddings. The first dance was always for Norma, but then he never missed a chance to dance with the bride! According to Floyd, there were no strangers, just friends you hadn’t met. He made you feel like family and will be greatly missed by all.
Floyd was a 67-year member of Lygonia Lodge, 49 years as a member of the Anah Temple Shrine serving in the Anah Shrine Flag Unit for many years. He was proud to wear the fez, walk in parades, and serve the shrine’s mission with his Lady by his side.
He was the light in Norma’s life, always by her side quietly supporting her 4-H adventures and her many contributions to the Town of Waltham. They were a team to be envied and were respected by family, friends they called family, and their lifelong friends. They never went anywhere without someone knowing them. Floyd always had a twinkle in his eye, a mischievous grin, and a story to tell. To know Floyd was a comfort to all who met him. He lived his life the way he wanted and what a life he lived! He was happiest surrounded by his large family and friends where stories were told, good food was shared, and laughter filled the room. Hunting and fishing were not just favorite pastimes; they were his life. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with his wife, children, grandchildren, and the many others whom he mentored during his long life. Gravel Brook may be a mystery, but it is the center of good tales that will carry on with the next generation.
He is survived by his wife Norma (Magoon) of 67 1⁄2 years and their five children. Kathy Cobb of Osborn, Larry and wife, Nancy of Eastbrook, Ronald and wife, Ellen of Waltham, Judy and husband, Michael Hellum of Waltham, and Joannie Jodrey of Waltham. 18 grandchildren (and their significant others) that he loved and adored along with 15 great grandchildren that will continue to bring the light into Norma’s life. Two brothers-in-law, David and Elwood Magoon of Osborn. Several nieces and nephews. Floyd lived an extraordinary life surrounded by many special and amazing friends too numerous to list and you all know who you are!
Floyd was the last of Arthur and Elvellyn's seven children having been predeceased by his sisters, Dora, Wilda, Leota, LaVerne and brothers, Robert, and Bill. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, David Jodrey, a grandson, Scott Cobb, and brother-in-law, Stanley Magoon.
Friends are invited to call 5-7pm, Sun., Feb. 18, 2024, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth with a masonic service being held at 6:30 pm. Funeral Services will be held 10 am, Mon, Feb. 19 at Jordan-Fernald. A gathering will follow at Eastbrook Community Building. Private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Waltham.
