Obituary for Eve Joanne Cassatt

Brooksville, Maine
Eve Joanne Linger Hamblett Cassatt, wife of Robert K. Cassatt and long-time Brooksville area resident, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2010. Born July 15, 1930 in Lost Creek, West Virginia, her father, R Basil Linger, a country doctor and Eve’s mother, Maude May Teter Linger, raised five children; when Eve was a young girl, they settled in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Eve graduated with honors in 1952 from the University of West Virginia where she majored in Home Economics. She was member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority where she formed life long friendships. She married Lawrence Culver Hornor of Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1952 and devoted herself to raising her three children, Mark Hornor of Cuppertino, California, Richard Hornor of Framingham, Massachusetts and Elizabeth Hornor Boquet of Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1968, Eve married Charles Kittredge Hamblett of Nashua, New Hampshire and extended her family to welcome his children, Nanci Hamblett Wilson of West Palm Beach, Florida and Charles Judson Hamblett of Haiti. Eve relocated to Maine after living and raising her children in New Hampshire for 20 years. As a teen, in 1979 Donna Polk of Glastonbury, Connecticut found a special place in the hearts of Charles and Eve and was considered one of their dearest. A community volunteer for over fifty years, she actively participated as a founder of the library in Pelham, New Hampshire and the Head Start program; the League of Women Voters; Deer Isle Growing up Reading Program; Nashua Memorial Hospital Volunteers; taught yoga; sang in the Nashua and Bagaduce Chorale choirs; wrote short stories and poetry in writing groups, and created unique children’s books for her numerous adoring grandchildren. Five years ago her family expanded yet again. At age 76, Eve married Robert K. Cassatt, who survives her in Brooksville. She opened her arms to his three children, Lydia Cassatt Osgood of Brooksville, Maine, Robert Cassatt of Atkinson, New Hampshire and Simmie Cassatt Isenberg of Haverhill, Massachusetts. Her remaining years were joyfully spent attending jazz festivals with dear friends, travelling here and abroad, and sailing the waters of coastal Maine.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Deer Isle - Stonington Elementary School library, 249 North Deer Isle Rd., Deer Isle, 04627.
