Obituary for Emma Louise Richards

Emma L. Richards
BAR HARBOR- Emma Louise Richards, 88, passed away March 15, 2021 at Seaport Village Healthcare in Ellsworth, ME. She was born April 7, 1932, the daughter of Hollis G. and Lillian M. (Rich) Reed.
Emma graduated from Pemetic High School in 1950, and from Farmington State Teachers College in 1954 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. In 1953, she married the love of her life, Charles L. Richards. Together, they raised seven children. Emma loved family gatherings where she could spend time with her children, grandchildren and the entire Reed and Richards families.
Emma began her teaching career in 1972 at Mount Desert Elementary School where she taught for 22 years at the elementary grade levels. In 1979, Emma earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She enjoyed membership in many organizations including the Order of the Eastern Star, Mount Desert Woman’s Literary Club, Mount Desert Island Historical Society, Hancock County Retired Teachers Association, and the Red Hat Club. Emma was an active member of the Somesville Union Meeting House, U.C.C. since 1954 where she sang in the choir for over 50 years. After retirement, Emma volunteered at local nursing homes and care facilities where she entertained the residents with songs, puzzles, and games. She enjoyed reading, painting, sewing, and playing the piano.
Emma is survived by her children and their families, Martha and Vincent Abbott of Bar Harbor; Jeffrey Richards of Trumansburg, NY; Peter and Susan Richards of Valrico, FL; Scott and Laurie Richards of Ellsworth; Lisa Richards and Tammy McLaughlin of Orrington, Vicki Tibbetts of Bar Harbor; and Kevin and Josephine Richards of Montville. She is also survived by her 20 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Emma was predeceased by her husband, Charles; her sisters Charlotte, Eunice, Kathlyn, and Natalie; her brothers Gardner, Stanley, Hobart, Hollis, Jr., Clayton, and Richard.
Our family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Seaport Village Healthcare and Beacon Hospice for the loving care and compassion that Mom received during the final years of her life.
Graveside Services will be held 11am, Sat. June 26, 2021 at Mountain View Cemetery, Town Hill (Bar Harbor) with Rev. Dana Reed presiding. Those who desire may make contributions in Emma’s memory to the Somesville Union Meeting House, UCC, P.O. Box 96, Mt. Desert, ME 04660.
