Obituary for Emil J. Andy Jr.

Blue Hill

Emil J Andy, Jr., 80, passed away Feb 11, 2024, at the Blue Hill Hospital surrounded by his family and beloved dog Alex. He was born July 13, 1943, the son of Emil and Irene (Lemieux) Andy in Augusta, ME.

He graduated from Cony High School and Gorham State Teachers College. He started his lifelong teaching career at Potter Academy and Marshwood Junior High following graduation. This was interrupted by service in the Air Force as a programming specialist at Otis Air Force Base, after graduating with honors from a training course at Sheppard Air Force Base.

After an honorable discharge in 1970, Emil and his family came to Blue Hill and George Stevens Academy, where he would serve as a teacher, assistant headmaster, and trustee over the next 40+ years. He cared deeply for GSA. He touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff who experienced his unique blend of intelligence, wit, strong opinions, and concern for their wellbeing.

Emil was an accomplished self-taught hobbyist. In various summers he worked with his family fishing lobster and crab, cutting firewood, and creating a computerized index of RC plane magazine articles. He also enjoyed woodworking, welding, flying planes with the R/C Gulls, model building, car and tractor restoration, and metal machining. He was especially proud of the ‘63 Austin-Healey Sprite he and Ellie restored along with a ‘51 Ford 8n tractor from his sister Judy that he brought back to life.

Always an active person, Emil enjoyed tennis (he played for Gorham State), fishing, and especially golf. He was a golf coach at GSA and was a long-time member of the Blue Hill Country Club, where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee, and was a member of the Bar Harbor Golf Club in Trenton, ME. Additionally, he served as a member of the Blue Hill Fire Dept for many years. Later in life, he and his various dogs enjoyed many walks in the Blue Hill area.

Devoted to his family, Emil and Ellie made many trips to the Youngstown, OH area where Mark, Laura, and Dominic live. His grandson introduced him to Legos, and they enjoyed building many models together as well as talking about mathematics. An avid reader, especially of non-fiction, he enjoyed discussing and sharing books with his daughter-in-law. When traveling to Ohio became too difficult, he used his love of technology to keep up with his son’s family via video conferencing.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Eleanor (Ellie); son Mark and wife Laura, and their son Dominic; sisters Jane, Judy, and Earlene; and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his infant son David.

Emil was greatly loved and will be missed. There will be a celebration of his life this summer in Blue Hill, ME.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in Emil’s memory to George Stevens Academy, 23 Union St., Blue Hill, 04614.
