Obituary for Cheryl Chase

NORTHEAST HARBOR – Cheryl Chase, 69, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2019, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. She was born July 5, 1949 in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Philip Caughey and Ellen Lawson. She is survived by her two sons, Colby and Brandon, who both reside out-of-state, as well as the father of her children, Buddy, of Ellsworth. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Lucinda Caughey.
Cheryl grew up in Bedford, MA and was introduced to Northeast Harbor as a child by her father, who worked many summers at the Fleet. After attending Adrian College and the University of Maine, she moved to Mount Desert Island permanently and opened her shop, Impressions, in 1972. For more than 45 years she operated the business, known for her hand-made crafts and rope bracelets, which became a staple in Northeast Harbor commerce. Soon after, Cheryl became editor and publisher of MDI’s social register, The Redbook, which she continued through its 107th year of publication in 2019.
Cheryl was an active and integral member of the community, serving in multiple capacities with the Chamber of Commerce and various other boards and committees. She could often be found volunteering at local events, tending to the town’s feral cat population, or chatting on Main Street.
Cheryl’s encyclopedic knowledge of town history, salty sense of humor, and love for hardshell lobster will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. A memorial service and potluck will be held at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor from 1pm-3pm on Saturday, June 22, 2019. Dishes and stories to share are welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Neighborhood House, PO Box 332, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662. Arrangements by Acadia Burial & Cremation Direct, 248 State Street, Ellsworth.
