Obituary for Betty Walls Fernald
Mt. Desert
Betty Walls Fernald, 89, a loving mother and wife died November 24, 2020 at her home surrounded by family. She was born March 13, 1931 in Tremont the daughter of Granville E. and Lurlene (Rumill) Walls.
Betty grew up in Tremont where after her father’s death Lurlene married Rodney Murphy. Rodney was a loving father to Betty. In 1952 Betty married John S. Fernald, Jr. and they made their home in Somesville. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook. John owned Bordeaux Dairy Farm where Betty worked in many capacities and her quiet support was a great asset to the business.
Betty was very active with her husband John during his many years in the Anah Shrine. She enjoyed traveling and meeting new people. Betty loved to spend time at camp on Long Pond. She loved her family and the time she spent with them was most important.
Betty is survived by her three children: Cecil Fernald and wife Julie, Stephen Fernald and wife Wanda and Penny Fernald all of Mt. Desert; three special grandchildren, Emily, John and Alice Fernald: a brother Eugene Walls; brother-in-law and sister in-law, Robert and Jean Fernald; niece Lauri Fernald and partner Micki Sumpter, and many other nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband John S. Fernald, Jr., a sister Eleanor Brown and husband Eugene, and a sister-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Walls. Special thanks to caregivers, Debbie, Sara, Joiey, Pam and Honey Jo; also to MDI Hospital, Mt. Desert Nursing Association, Beacon Hospice and the Northeast Harbor Ambulance Service.
Funeral services will be held 10am, Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020 at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St. Mt. Desert. Interment will be at Brookside Cemetery, Somesville. Those who desire may make contributions in Betty’s memory to the Mt. Desert Nursing Ass., P.O. Box 397, Northeast Harbor, 04662.
