Barbara Lorraine Rosenthal died peacefully on March 31st in Ellsworth, Maine. She was born November 24, 1929 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, only daughter of Edwin Otto and Alice (Peeling) Stander. She graduated from high school having excelled in music and went on to the Eastman School of Music, where she studied piano. Moving to New York City, she worked as a fashion model, meeting composer Laurence Rosenthal, to whom she was married from 1952 to 1986. They bought ‘Windemere’ on Suttons Island in 1960 where she summered until very recently. In 2005 she moved from New York to Seal Harbor, then to Sonogee Living Center in Bar Harbor and on to Seaport Village in Ellsworth where she spent her final years.
Barbara (‘Bubbie’ to her grandchildren) was an exuberant personality, musician, sailor, entertainer and life and soul of every party. As a Tai Chi master, she practiced and taught pupils in New York and Maine for many years. Philosophical and spiritual questions were always a primary concern in her life. She was an accomplished musician and played the piano into her 80s. She loved nature and took great solace from it in her later years. She was much loved by her friends and will be sorely missed by her family.
She is survived by her two daughters; Nadia Rosenthal and her husband Alan Sawyer of Seal Harbor, Maria Rosenthal and her husband David Baldock of London, England; and her two granddaughters Hannah and Clara Baldock of London, England.
Her life will be celebrated at a later date when friends and family are once again able to gather together and raise a glass.
