Obituary for Alexander "Sandy" Watts

Bass Harbor

Alexander (Sandy) Watts died on May 28, 2021, at Maine Medical Center, Portland from injuries sustained in a freak kitchen fire at his home in Bass Harbor on May 25.

Sandy was born in New York City in 1935. He graduated from St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, and Harvard University. He also earned an MBA from New York University. His career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company spanned almost 40 years. He worked primarily in the investment department evaluating loans to utility companies.

Always a lover of the natural world, Sandy and his wife Eleanor and their children traveled to many of this country’s National Parks. It was fitting that he would retire in the shadow of Acadia, America’s first national park. A collector from an early age he had an extensive collection of US coins, starting with Indian Head pennies and continuing right up through the latest National Park Quarters. Also, a numismatist he focused on US commemoratives, both singles ad plate blocks.

In addition to his wife, Sandy is survived by his daughter Frances Elizabeth, daughter-in-law Rebecca, two granddaughters, Natalie, and Emma and two grandsons, Alex and Clayton. He was predeceased by his son Alex Watts.

A memorial service will be held at 4 pm at the Church of St. John the Divine, 315 Main St., Southwest Harbor on July 31, 2021. Donations in his memory may be sent to The Forman School, P.O. Box 80, Litchfield, CT, 06759.
