Obituary for Gaylor Arnold Sanborn

Brooksville

Gaylor A Sanborn, 78 of Brooksville, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loved ones on June 3rd, 2017. Gaylor was born on August 3rd,1938, son of the late Florence Sanborn.

He was a graduate of the Brooksville High School class of 1957, after which Gaylor set out to do various jobs in his life. He worked several years at the Callahan Mine in Cape Rosier after which he worked as a caretaker for many summer residences. For several decades, Gaylor proudly drove the school bus, going beyond the call of duty to insure the children's safety. He also operated a gravel pit in Sedgwick where many local contractors had daily interactions with him.

Gaylor took great pride as a member of the Brooksville Fire Department where he was active for over 40 years. He was assistant chief for 4 years. He would make a daily drive around town to “check on things”
He was an enormous presence in the community, always there for people in a time of need. He was known for his kindness and generosity and willing to lend a hand; a rare and treasured soul. Simple pleasures like sitting on the “piazza” waving to all that passed by was one of the greatest pleasures later in life. He also took great pride in mowing his fields.

Gaylor touched so many lives with his wit, sense of humor, gentle kindness. He had crystal blue eyes and a warm and welcoming smile that would comfort all.

Gaylor is survived by several cousins and many friends.

A celebration of life will be held for Gaylor from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Brooksville Community Center on July 8th.

Gifts in Gaylor’s memory can be made to the Brooksville Volunteer Fire Dept. P.O. Box 243, Brooksville, Maine 04617.
