Obituary for Elisabeth "Nellik" Doble (Heijning)

Print
Brooklin-Cornelia Elisabeth (Nellik) Heijning Doble, 97, died peacefully after a short illness on October 13, 2018, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Doble was born and raised in Holland and Norway. She came to this country in 1939 to attend Mount Holyoke College. Because of the war she was unable to return home after graduation in 1942. Instead she worked in New York City as a bilingual secretary for a Dutch shipping company. Following her marriage to Frank Dearing Doble, in March of 1943, she and her husband moved to Massachusetts. For many years they lived together in Hingham. During this time Mrs. Doble was active in the League of Women Voters, sang in a church choir, and together with her husband, as members of the Hingham Yacht Club, raced a sailboat. The sailboats became progressively bigger until Mr. Doble bought a yawl that they sailed together for many years. They both loved sailing, and were adventurous enough to do the Marion to Bermuda Race twice. Having become acquainted with Maine because their boat was built and serviced in Southwest Harbor, in 1978 they decided to retire in Brooklin. They loved their house on Herrick’s Bay, a spot that kept them endlessly in awe of the view out their windows: the ebb and flow of the tide and especially the sunrises. During her 40 years in Maine, Mrs. Doble was a member of the Bagaduce Chorale and one of the first volunteers in the lending library, where she was still helping until a few weeks before her death.
Mrs. Doble was predeceased by her parents, Dolph and Katie Heijning; her husband of 66 years, Frank D. Doble; her three brothers, Dolph, Edy, and Bjorn. She is survived by her three children, Wendela Doble Yeo Correia and her husband Anthony (Plymouth MA), Frank Dearing Doble, Jr. and his wife Cheryl (Martha’s Vineyard), and Ellen Steel (Pasadena CA); six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service was held October 15, 2018, at Beth Eden Chapel, Brooklin. Donations in Mrs. Doble’s name may be made to the Bagaduce Music Lending Library, 49 South Street, Blue Hill 04614
