Obituary for Hubert James "Jim" Burks Jr.

Hubert James "Jim" Burks Jr.
Ellsworth -- Hubert James (Jim) Burks Jr. redeemed sinner and child of God, sent to abide on this planet July 30, 1927 has departed to a better place. He passed away December 24, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. Jim was born in Richmond, Virginia to the late Hubert James Burks Sr. and Ruby Elizabeth Wooten.

Jim graduated from John Marshall High School, Richmond, Va. in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman and Cryptologic Technician for 27 years during the period of WWII, Korean, and Vietnam wars. Jim worked for Merrill’s Furniture in Ellsworth for 15 years and retired in 1987.

Jim’s life was filled with service to others from supporting local schools, food pantries, children’s service organizations, and greeting troops, to being a founding member of St. Andrew Lutheran church. His final days were spent enjoying a meal and socializing with people at restaurants around town and listening and occasionally singing with a local jazz group. He found comfort in spending time with his dear friends at Robert and Mary’s Place in Ellsworth where he would share one of his many stories over a cup of coffee.

Jim is preceded by his bride of 65 years, Althea Velma Carter of Ellsworth. He left a legacy of a loving family; two sons, Jimmy Burks and his wife Linda (Buchholz) Burks of Littleton, Co, David Burks and his wife Julie (King) Burks of Ellsworth; two daughters, Madelene (Suzie) Gowie and her husband Art Gowie of Bangor and Elizabeth (Liz) Burks of Ellsworth; 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; and countless cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances.

In the spring there will be a celebration of life service at St. Andrew Lutheran Church followed by interment with full military honors at Woodbine Cemetery in Ellsworth.

Those who wish may donate in Jim’s memory to Robert & Mary’s Place, P.O. Box 1533 Meadow View Lane, Ellsworth, Maine 04605 or organization of their choosing.
