Obituary for Helen Eliza Kurtz (Schorno)
Surry -- Helen Eliza Kurtz, 94, died August 09, 2017 at EMMC, Bangor. She was born in Passaic, NJ., January 23, 1923, the daughter of the late Hector and Helen (Trentsch) Schorno.
Helen attended public schools in Delawana, NJ. She married James M. Kurtz and worked with ITT Electric in New Jersey for several years. They later moved to Wayne, NJ and Helen was a stay at home mother. In 1966, they moved to Skowhegan where she worked briefly with W. T. Grant Department Store and was owner of Wax N’ Petal Shop. In 1989 they moved and settled in Surry. She became an accomplished artist with acrylic painting and enjoyed fishing with her son, John. She truly loved her animals. Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving in the choir, and was involved with the Hancock County Extension Service.
She is survived by: her daughter, Lorraine McKelvey and husband, James of OK, and sons, John Kurtz and wife, Yvonne of Surry, and James C. Kurtz and wife, Phyllis of Eddington; sister, Terry Lewer of FL; brother, Hector Schorno and wife, Laurie of NJ; grandchildren: Cory Kurtz and wife Justinn of FL, Ryan Kurtz of Surry, Yaakov McKelvey and wife Elizabeth of OK, and Hillel McKelvey of OK and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James of 48 years, and sisters, Elizabeth and Iola.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am, August 14, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main St. Ellsworth. Interment will be at North Bend Cemetery, Surry.
