Obituary for Dorothy R. "Bam" Fitch

Ellsworth
Dorothy R. “Bam” Fitch, 91, died October 03, 2016 at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born July 19, 1925 on Great Cranberry Island the daughter of Gustav Nils and Ruth Frances (Stanley) Peterson.

Dot graduated from Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor in 1944 as Warren Stanley’s wartime bride. They were married for 5 years during his stint in the U.S.Coast Guard and later as a fisherman. Warren died at sea aboard his trawler in 1948.

Dorothy and Merritt P. Fitch married in 1950 after meeting at the Hancock House where Merritt both cooked and sang. He later became a policeman, and Hancock County Sheriff. While raising an ever- expanding family, Dorothy served as the jail cook, court officer, matron and secretary at the District Attorney’s office. Merritt and Dot were married for 35 years until his death in 1984.

Dot served on many county committees and was known as the Daffodil Lady at the courthouse. Upon retirement from the District Attorney’s office in 1989, she and Fred Beal made a life together, enjoying their time spent at Lord’s Beach in Trenton and in Treasure Island, FL. They had 10 wonderful years together until his death in 1999.

Dorothy was as vibrant as the vivid red eyeglasses she wore. She found joy in life in the circles of friends she made, Pemetic High School classmates, bowling buddies, Sylvia’s muffin ladies, and Community of Christ Fellowship. Dorothy loved to “hit it big” at Bingo, to play the lottery, and to savor the thrill of victory with Boston sports teams. Her large extended family feels they hit the biggest jackpot with Dorothy as their matriarch.
