There are three main avenues for obtaining copies of death certificates -- the funeral home, the local municipal authority, and the State.

The second best option is to contact the city hall or town office of the town where the individual died. Many can now print certified copies of a death certificate on the spot.

A third option is to contact the Maine Department of Health and Human Services at (207) 287-3181 or on-line at www.maine.gov/dhhs/faq.htm#certificates.
